Eixample
Barcelona is known as a tolerant, open city. There is now an area in the Eixample Esquerra where members of the homosexual community have settled and opened bars, restaurants and nightclubs. An area of Barcelona, known as “Gaixample”, decorated with rainbow flags and a magnet for lovers of Barcelona nightlife.
The area known as "Gaixample" isn’t exclusively homosexual but the proliferation of bars, discotheques and gay-friendly hotels have made this part of Barcelona a magnet for the LGTB community. This mini-neighbourhood in the Eixample, which is bordered by the Carrer Balmes, Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, Carrer Urgell and Carrer Aragó, has gained international renown among the gay community, many of whom have come to live in this part of town, filling bars, clubs and balconies with their rainbow flags. At night, party animals make a beeline for this part of town in search of fun and entertainment in one of Barcelona’s main nightlife hubs.
